New Learning Pathway - Class 1 Program
Class 1 Program – New Learning Pathway
Our Class 1 New Learning Pathway is designed for individuals seeking a career in commercial trucking. This program follows Alberta’s MELT (Mandatory Entry-Level Training) standards and provides a structured, tier-based approach that transitions learners from foundational theory to practical skill-building. By the end of the program, students are equipped to drive across Alberta or Canada, depending on the pathway they complete.
Provisional Restricted License (Within Alberta)
Total Duration: 108.5 Hours
This section prepares you to obtain a Class 1 Provisional Restricted License, which allows you to operate commercial vehicles within Alberta. It includes three main components:
Tier 1: Entry Program (40 Hours)
The Entry Program provides learners with the basic knowledge required for a successful start in commercial driving. The training focuses on:
- Introduction to the trucking industry and the role of a professional driver.
- Safety practices, driving ethics, and regulatory awareness.
- Preparation for the Class 1 Knowledge Test.
Delivery Options: - Self-led online modules through our Learning Management System (LMS).
- Instructor-supported in-class or blended learning (optional).
Outcome:
Students will gain the foundational understanding needed to progress to in-yard and in-cab training and will be eligible to write the Alberta Class 1 Knowledge Test.

Tier 2: Core Learning Program (60 Hours)
This practical component builds technical driving skills in both controlled environments and real-world scenarios. Training includes:
- In-yard vehicle inspections, coupling/uncoupling procedures, and maneuvering.
- In-cab training focused on highway, city, and rural driving.
- Pre-trip inspections, load securement, shifting, and defensive driving.
Additional Component:
Students who do not already have a Q endorsement must complete the Air Brake Training Course, which adds 8.5 hours of instruction covering the operation, inspection, and maintenance of air brake systems.
Outcome:
Upon successful completion, students are eligible to attempt the road test for the Provisional Class 1 License (restricted to Alberta). They can then begin working under an apprenticeship-style model, gaining experience while continuing to build their skills.
Inter-Provisional License (Canada-Wide)
Total Duration: 133.5 Hours
This part of the program enables drivers to upgrade their provisional Alberta license to a full interprovincial Class 1 license, allowing them to operate commercial vehicles across all Canadian provinces.
Tier 3: Competence Building Program (25 Hours)
This advanced, personalized stage of training focuses on refining and mastering professional driving competencies. It includes:
- One-on-one instruction tailored to the student’s performance and on-road assessment.
- Identification of specific areas requiring improvement, such as turning techniques, braking control, gear usage, or emergency handling.
- Repeated practice and evaluation to ensure full readiness for interprovincial driving.
Outcome:
Upon demonstrating improvement in all key competencies, the provisional restriction is removed from the driver’s license. Graduates receive full mobility to drive across Canada as certified Class 1 drivers.
